I want to give you an update on what is happening at Pickersgill regarding our experience with the current public health emergency. Here is what has happened since my last update on April 10th:
· As of today April 20, 2020, no assisted living or nursing home residents in the building have tested positive for COVID-19. The results for the two assisted living residents who were being tested came back negative. No resident is currently being tested.
· We continue to monitor symptomatic and asymptomatic staff. Three nursing staff who stated that they felt ill with symptoms that warrant testing have been tested and they all tested negative for COVID-19.
· The part-time food service employee that I told you about in my April 10 email who had tested positive has not returned and will not until she has 2 negative tests 24 hours apart and is symptom free. We are still awaiting the results from another food service employee who is not working at this time. Contact lists have been developed of other employees and residents who might have come in contact with them and the individuals are asymptomatic.
· We continue to be in daily contact with the Baltimore County Department of Health. We are providing the Health Department with daily updates.
I know that many of you are concerned about the quality of life that your family member is experiencing given the restrictions that have been imposed to minimize their exposure risk. The activities department under Melissa Miller’s leadership has been very creative in keeping our assisted living and nursing home residents engaged in activities during this state of emergency. The activities staff have adjusted and updated the way activities are being delivered in order to ensure social well-being and safety. Beginning March 29th, activities staff began broadcasting activities directly to resident’s personal TVs in their rooms using the community channel on our TV system. This allowed the activities staff to keep residents in their room and enforce social distancing while reaching as many assisted living and Decker residents as possible. Examples of this programming include: Religious services, bingo, movies, Broadway clips, Pokeno, Musical concerts, Gentle stretches, Trivia, Symphony Orchestras, Crossword Puzzles and other activities that can be broadcast. They also continue to offer room service Happy Hour carts twice a week, Ice-cream carts, and a book cart. They are also offering Skype Video Chat services on a set schedule so residents can visit with their family members.
Please be assured that we continue to be committed to protecting our residents, and staff. We have been, and will continue to be, vigilant with infection-control protective measures for all residents and employees in the hope of minimizing the spread of Covid-19 on our campus. However, this is an increasing challenge given the continued increase in COVID cases in Baltimore. We will keep you informed with periodic updates as appropriate or as events warrant.
